Bermondsey B-17 Aircraft

The people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe helped raise money for the war effort, four aircraft were named for them in recognition of their efforts.

  • Bermondsey Battler
  • Bermondsey Special
  • London Avenger
  • Rotherhithe’s Revenge

The aircraft were B17 bombers flown by the US Air Force from Ridgewell in Essex. Whilst the airfield has now returned to farmland, you can just about make out the runways on this Google Maps link.

The “Bermondsey Battler” was shot down over Germany, everyone in this picture was killed.

“Rotherhithe’s Revenge” survived the war, flown back to the USA and then scrapped.
